Aspen Crossing has been evolving over the past 11 years to what it is today, a Railway themed historical destination. Spring 2015 will mark the newest addition in its evolution, the Aspen Crossing Railway.
Comprised of a rescued caboose, proudly showcasing the Aspen Crossing Railway name; Aspen Crossing Railway will be offering 8 different themed train excursions. These tours will take place on 14 miles of CPR track that would have otherwise been ripped from the ground, leaving no sign of the important role they once played in settling the west.
Jason Thornhill, the founder of Aspen Crossing has been compared by many who know him, as the prairie version of, Walt Disney. “After growing up with the CPR track running through our family farm, I never realized how much the trains would be missed until they were gone;” says Thornhill. With a strong passion for our prairie heritage that literally began with the railroad, and possessing a dogged determination that had to rival Walt himself, Jason set about combining his love of the land, railroads and horticulture that has become Aspen Crossing today; a cultural, rural tourist destination that offers stay and play, dining, shopping and entertainments for all ages.
ACR has grown to include 85 campsites for tents and RV’s. There are 3 beautifully restored Caboose cabins for rent. An 1887 Pullman Rail Car that once belonged to John Diefenbaker now turned into a fine dining restaurant. Aspen Crossing also consists of, greenhouses, farm animals, vegetable gardens and a truly unique gift store housed in a replica Train Station. The original Mossleigh Train Station is also on site, awaiting restoration.
The inaugural train tour will kick off the new offering of train excursions on May 15, 2015.
Train excursions range from 1. 25 hours to 4 hours approximately in length. Most tours include a realistic train robbery, with donations going to charity. We are very excited and thrilled that Guns of the Golden West will be doing true re-enactments of what it was like to travel through the west when the first prairie settlers travelled the rails.
